WELL - THIS WAS A MOST EXCITING DAY!
Bubbles began to have serious contractions at 5:20 am, and after one hour and still no puppies, called the vet who said to bring her right in (which is an hour drive). When we arrived at the office, and she was checked, it was determined that a c-section was needed....and so off she went to surgery. An hour later, we had NINE PUPPIES - 6 boys and 3 girls, and happy and healthy, and Momma Bubbles was also doing well. It seems that puppy #1 presented himself sideways in the birth canal and there was no way he would be able to be born in that position. Had we not acted as quickly as we did, we could very easily have lost not only the puppies but momma dog as well....even so, her uterus was torn and was repaired but we will not consider breeding her again.
Bubbles is taking wonderful care of her babies and they are all active nursers, and complain loudly if they do not get the nipple of their choice. Here are pictures taken just three hours after their birth. Some of the pups have their yarn "necklaces" which the vet techs used to tell them apart (after all, they all look alike!). We will make up our own chart soon and remove the yarn.
I live about 1-1/4 hour away from Bubbles home so I will plan to visit them weekly and will do blog updates every week, so plan on checking back soon. First update will take place this weekend.
Congrats Bubbles! I'm so glad everyone is safe and sound. Such a cute litter! I can't wait to watch them grow!
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful litter of pups. Bubbles looks wonderful after such a difficult ordeal. The proud father is relaxing in his favorite window. He plans to hand out bones to his neighborhood buddies tomorrow to celebrate the birth of his children.
ReplyDeleteCongrats! All of my little nieces and nephews look adorable! The mama looks great too, considering what she went through. I can't wait to see if any of them turn out to be Frisbee-loving, squirrel-hating, water puppies who like to snuggle!
